What exactly is an island car? If you live on Peaks, Long, Chebeague or Cliff Islands there is no need to explain. For the unschooled an Island Car is a car that conforms to all of the requirements for licensing and driving a car on the inhabited islands of Casco Bay, i.e. none.
The major functions of island cars are; 1. go to and from the ferry. 2. go places on the island. On Great Chebeague Island for example you might go to the boat yard (1.6 miles from the ferry) or the Library/Market/Town Hall (2.3 miles) or to the Inn/Golf Club (3 miles)
Long Island is 3 miles long and 1 mile wide. There you would travel to the Boat House for milk and eggs or maybe Shirley’s house (an undisclosed location). On the other hand, you could opt to never leave your house on the island. You could order your life on Amazon and Lorinda could bring it to you in the van we outfitted for her.
Peaks Island although the smallest, 1 mile long by 1 mile wide, is the most populated, so be careful of the traffic. There we recommend alternating the direction of travel around the island from clockwise to counter clockwise to balance the wear on your tires.
At Ocean Street we are proud to be a purveyor of Island Cars. These uninspected gems provide stylish transportation for year-round and summer residents. Shirley’s pink jeep and Lorinda’s work van (customized with smooth wooden floor and riding companion) are prime examples of the lengths we will go to make sure the Islanders can get around year-round.
Whether you are a year-round or summer resident of the Casco Bay Islands we can find a vehicle that meets your needs. Generally, these beauties go for two to four thousand. Let us know what you are looking for and we can find it for you.
